When someone asks for an alcohol-free drink, the response need not start with “why?”. Hosting can also mean making this choice as simple and considered as any other. It is an approach to conviviality that goes far beyond organising a summer party.
A Luxembourg campaign to carry into everyday habits
In 2026, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Health and Social Security dedicated a campaign to conviviality without alcohol. The initiative includes a mocktail recipe booklet and videos made with mixologist Raphael Betti, founder of BAC bar in Luxembourg City.
The campaign is aimed in particular at festivals, barbecues, funfairs and nights out at bars or clubs. It reminds people that there is no risk-free alcohol consumption. This is a summer 2026 prevention campaign, not an announcement of a new event taking place in October.
For a reception at home, our suggestion is to take one simple idea from it: prepare the alternative before guests arrive, rather than improvising when someone asks for it.
Make the offer thoughtful, not complicated
Make it clear what is available and state the ingredients. A carefully chosen glass, a drink served in the right conditions and an easy-to-understand description may be enough; there is no need to multiply the number of options.
If you use the official booklet, follow the recipe you have consulted rather than attributing a modified version to the campaign. For a shop-bought drink, check the label rather than relying only on its brand name or the appearance of the bottle.
| What to prepare | Why it matters to guests |
|---|---|
| A simple announcement of the options | Know what is on offer without having to justify themselves |
| Ingredients available | Be able to decide according to their needs |
| Equally thoughtful service | Avoid treating the alternative as a second-best choice |
Respect the preference without explaining its cause
Someone may not want to explain what motivates their choice. Our editorial stance is to let that information remain theirs: welcoming a preference does not require interpreting it.
This article offers no cure, promise of detoxification or advice on withdrawal. In cases of dependence or difficulty cutting down, medical support is appropriate. Here, the issue is hospitality: making the alcohol-free option visible, enjoyable and easy to choose, without turning a shared moment into a comment on anyone’s life.
