Fraudulent text messages: what NordVPN’s filter can detect

On iPhone, NordVPN’s Message Protection can detect signs of fraud and classify messages identified as scam attempts as junk. It requires a compatible device and subscription, and does not replace checking the sender or the recipient’s judgement.

An anti-scam filter can flag a suspicious text message before you open its link. It cannot check for you whether a supposed delivery or banking alert is genuine: with NordVPN’s Message Protection, the warning is only a clue, and the decision is up to the recipient. Here is what the feature says it does, what it requires and what it cannot guarantee.

Detecting clues, not establishing the truth

Scam messages often use familiar pretexts: a parcel awaiting collection, a fine to pay or a bank account that needs securing. Their aim is to push the recipient to act quickly, usually by clicking a link that leads to a fake website. The site may try to steal login details or payment information.

NordVPN’s Message Protection is designed to detect signs associated with this type of fraud. According to the company’s documentation, it examines links, sender numbers, certain keywords and writing or behavioural patterns considered suspicious, among other things. When it detects something, it displays an alert or classifies the message as junk.

This can help interrupt the instinct to click, but it does not verify the sender’s identity. A flagged message is not necessarily fraudulent; conversely, the absence of an alert does not prove that it is trustworthy. The filter recognises clues, not the real intentions of the person or organisation that sent the text.

On iPhone, messages from unknown senders are sorted

On iOS, the feature applies to messages from unknown senders. NordVPN says they can be sorted into categories, including ‘Transactions’, ‘Promotions’ and ‘Spam’. Messages identified as scam attempts are placed in junk, where they remain accessible. If a legitimate message has been misclassified, it can be marked as not junk and returned to the main list.

This arrangement has a practical effect: it can isolate suspicious texts without making them disappear. But it means keeping an eye on the categories, particularly when expecting a message from a sender who has never been saved. Automatic classification can also make a message less visible without anyone having checked its content.

NordVPN specifies that Message Protection works even when the VPN connection is switched off. It is therefore a feature separate from the VPN connection. Enabling it does not mean that the phone is connected to the VPN, or that this feature protects all activity on the device.

Compatibility and access: check before looking for the setting

To use the feature on iPhone, NordVPN says you need iOS 18.2 or later, the current version of the app and a plan that includes Call and Message Protection. The company does not sell this feature separately, according to its support page. The documentation also describes different set-up procedures depending on the iOS version: on iOS 18, filtering is in the message settings, while iOS 26 and later versions follow a different path. The labels may therefore vary from one device to another.

Activation involves more than just switching on a button in the app. You need to follow the steps requested by NordVPN and select the filter in the iPhone’s system settings. These permissions are required for the feature to work; they do not mean that the filter will automatically decide to delete messages.

The Phonandroid article also describes the feature on Android. It says the procedure may vary depending on the options already configured and that permissions may be requested. It is best to check the instructions shown in the app rather than applying the iPhone steps to Android.

The fact that the feature appears in documentation is not enough to establish that it is available in every country or with every plan offered locally. Residents of Luxembourg should therefore check their NordVPN account to see whether their subscription includes Call and Message Protection and whether the option appears in the app. Availability and pricing should be checked against the offer available to the account holder.

Stated privacy protections and the filter’s limits

NordVPN says the feature neither uploads nor stores message content on its servers, and that it looks for keywords and patterns associated with scams. This is a commitment by the company, distinct from an independent audit of how it works. Before deciding whether to enable the feature, it is worth consulting the privacy information and the permissions requested directly in the app and on the device.

Nor does a filter replace verification through an independent channel. If a text claims to come from a bank, a public authority or a delivery service, it is better to open the official app or type in the website address yourself rather than use the link in the message. A name, logo or displayed number is not enough to authenticate the sender.

In Luxembourg, POST recommends not replying to suspicious text messages and not clicking on their links. The operator also says it never sends text messages containing links and never asks for secret codes or personal information by text or email. If you have doubts about a message claiming to come from POST, its guidance directs you to customer services on 8002 8004. For any other organisation, use contact details found independently of the message.

A useful alert, but the recipient still has to judge

The feature may appeal to people who receive a lot of messages from unknown senders and want an additional warning before acting. However, it requires a compatible device, a plan that includes the option and activation of the necessary settings. When in doubt about a message, the safest thing to do is not click and to verify the request through an official channel.

NordVPN also says it offers a free tool for manually checking a suspicious text message. This is different from automatic filtering: you have to submit the message yourself for checking. In both cases, the result should be treated as assistance, not a guarantee. A filter can draw attention to something; it cannot decide on the recipient’s behalf whether a request is legitimate.
