France: what it means to become a National Police reservist

Training in two stages, selection and supervised duties: the path of a voluntary citizen involves more than a few days of extra support.

Temporarily reinforcing a police service involves recruitment, training and clearly defined duties. In France, the operational reserve includes, among others, voluntary citizens who already work in another profession. Their path differs from that of retired police officers or former security assistants.

Support duties, with a clear limit

The Service Public information sheet, verified on 18 August 2026, lists securing an area after an accident, the holiday tranquillity operation or certain fines issued under the authority of a judicial police officer. It expressly excludes maintaining and restoring public order.

For voluntary citizens, the requirements include French nationality, being aged between 18 and 67, a person’s status with regard to national service, and medical fitness. Applying does not guarantee admission: the application is reviewed and an interview forms part of the selection process. Specialists follow a specific recruitment process linked to their qualifications.

Training is more than an introduction to firearms

The official National Police presentation describes two stages for civilian candidates. First, 20 hours of online self-study, followed by 10 days of residential preparation, which is unpaid. The organisation of the police, the reservist’s role and intervention techniques are covered alongside training in the use of an individual weapon. Motivation, conduct and aptitude are assessed.

The contract is signed after this first period, if the criteria are met. Further training then comprises 30 hours online and two five-day periods at the training centre of the service to which the reservist is assigned. This second stage is paid. Service Public specifies that it must be completed within six months of signing.

A commitment to plan for the longer term

For voluntary citizens, the contract lasts one to five years, with a maximum of 90 days’ assignment per year, according to Service Public. Availability is scheduled in agreement with the service; reservists must then attend when called up.

Before applying, it is therefore important to consider the time required for training as well as for the duties. The police website says that applications can be submitted throughout the year and sets out the online procedure. These details relate to the French scheme and do not, on their own, determine the options available to an employee working in Luxembourg.
