Grand Théâtre: a visit to look behind the performance

A free visit in Luxembourgish is scheduled for 20 October at 12.30 pm. It offers another way into the theatre, through the venue and the work that make the stage possible.

We sometimes know a theatre by the shortest route: entrance, cloakroom, seat, exit. A guided tour can shift our gaze to what surrounds the performance. The Grand Théâtre offers this detour as part of the Spectators’ Circle, with several dates throughout the 2026/27 season.

The next date in Luxembourgish

The visit on Tuesday 20 October 2026 is scheduled for 12.30 pm, in Luxembourgish, and will last around an hour and a half. It is free to attend, but booking is required. The listing then gives a visit in English on 12 January 2027 and one in French on 15 June 2027, both at 12.30 pm.

The French-language visit on 18 September has already taken place by the time this article is published. It should therefore not be confused with an upcoming booking opportunity. Availability for the forthcoming visits should be checked on the official listing.

Three questions to take backstage

The programme announces a look backstage, without detailing all the areas that will be accessible. Rather than imagine a route, we suggest a few questions to ask the team:

  • How do you prepare for the transition from one performance to another?
  • How do people in the different professions coordinate their work during a performance?
  • What constraints of a building influence the choices made by an artistic team?

These questions do not assume that all the equipment will be visited or put into operation. They are intended to connect what is shown with the performance seen from the auditorium.

Observe without looking only for the spectacular

A door, an access point or a storage area may seem less spectacular than a set. Yet they offer opportunities to ask about the practical work involved. Our suggestion for the visit is to pick out a detail we might not have noticed if we had come only for a performance, then ask what it is used for.

It also helps to focus on the teams. A performance is not just its performers, and a visit can be an opportunity to better understand a role whose name we know only from a programme.

Book for a specific language and time

Before booking, check the language so you do not choose solely on the basis of the date. If you have mobility-related questions or a particular need, it is best to ask the organiser about the conditions of the planned route: being free and open to the public does not, in itself, describe how accessible each area is. The meeting point is announced as the Grand Théâtre, 1, rond-point Schuman, Luxembourg.
