First vel’OH! ride: remember the destination too

A bike-sharing service can be part of a trip around town. For a first try, choosing the route and the return station matters just as much as choosing the bike at the start.

There is no need to choose the most ambitious route straight away when trying vel’OH!. A familiar journey, at a time when you have a little leeway, lets you discover the service without the added pressure of an appointment. The first thing to look for is not just the nearest bike: it is also where you will finish your journey.

A service and availability are two different things

The City presents vel’OH! as an electric-assist bike service available twenty-four hours a day, every day. The official app allows users, among other things, to choose and release a bike, check their account and find stations with bikes available.

The service’s round-the-clock availability does not mean that a bike will always be available at the station you want. Before setting off, check the departure information and identify a return station as well as another nearby. Read the subscription and billing conditions on the operator’s website when choosing a plan.

A first route you can get to grips with

When trying out the bike, an itinerary whose main stretches you know is preferable to a shortcut chosen solely to save a few minutes. Taking the time to adjust the saddle and familiarise yourself with the controls is part of setting off.

A simple plan can be summed up in four points:

  • Find the way to the departure station.
  • Check the planned cycling route, especially at turns.
  • Work out where to return the bike and how to reach your destination on foot.
  • Have another option in mind if the service does not suit this journey.

There is no need to turn every trip into an expedition. The aim is to remove the small uncertainties that weigh more heavily when you are trying out a system: where to go, how to finish, what to do if you change your mind?

Finishing well matters as much as starting well

When you arrive, follow the return instructions and check that the hire has been confirmed as complete. The City says that if a problem arises, it can be reported through the app or user account. The impression that the bike has been “left in the right place” is no substitute for the service’s instructions.

After this first try, you can compare in practical terms the time spent walking, cycling and returning the bike. It is this personal experience on a real journey that helps you decide whether vel’OH! has a place in your routine.
