Cyberattack at WS Audiology: Widex restores its app, but some features are still awaited

Following the intrusion announced on 26 October, Widex restored MOMENT’s main features. The hearing aids continued to work, according to the manufacturer.

An app coming back online does not mean the whole incident has been resolved. At WS Audiology, owner of the Widex and Signia brands, services are being restored following the unauthorised access announced on 26 October. For Widex users, the useful news is that the main features of the MOMENT app are back, as confirmed in an update sent to HearingTracker on 4 November. Some features are, however, still scheduled for a forthcoming update.

The device, the app and the professional’s tools

To understand the disruption, it is necessary to distinguish between three levels. First is the hearing aid worn every day. Second is the app on the phone, which provides access to settings. Third are the platforms used by professionals to adjust devices or provide remote follow-up. Unavailability at one of these levels does not, by itself, describe the state of the other two.

In its update, reported by HearingTracker on 4 November, WSA says that Widex hearing aids continued to work during the incident. The company also says that professionals can once again make adjustments as normal using Compass Cloud. These are statements from the manufacturer, not the result of a test carried out by our editorial team.

The distinction is tangible: losing access to a settings interface can make use or support more difficult without meaning that the device has stopped working. Conversely, the fact that hearing function is maintained does not make an outage of the surrounding services insignificant.

What was affected

WS Audiology’s initial statement describes unauthorised access to its customer relationship management environment and certain operational systems. Customer relationship management, often referred to by the acronym CRM, is the environment used to track interactions with customers. The statement does not detail which data the intruder may have accessed.

The company restricted access to certain systems to contain the incident and carry out recovery operations. It says it contacted its customers directly and brought in external computer forensics specialists. 26 October is the date of this announcement: the document does not establish it as the confirmed date on which the intrusion began.

In its situation update of 3 November, eBuilder traces the outages affecting MOMENT, Compass Cloud and the Signia TeleCare remote follow-up service. This timeline also describes precautionary shutdowns. A platform taken offline to limit risks is not necessarily one whose every component has been compromised.

A gradual return, with a deadline still announced

The latest update consulted adds an important qualification to the general claim of a “return to normal”. MOMENT’s main features are available, but a further update concerning Android location services and Find My Hearing Aids is scheduled for 16 November 2026. This is a forecast, not a delivery that has already been confirmed.

WSA recommends that users install the latest version of the app. If problems persist after doing so, the manufacturer directs users to its local customer service team or the professional who provides follow-up for their hearing aid. This is not about changing a prescription or replacing a clinical setting oneself: the process is intended to address problems with the app’s operation.

The restoration is described as gradual, following testing. This approach explains why several tools associated with the same brand may regain their functions at different times.

Questions the restart does not resolve

The communications reviewed give neither the attacker’s name nor a quantified figure for people whose data may have been stolen. Nor do they allow us to conclude that patient records were published. Unauthorised access is confirmed; its precise extent must be distinguished from what one might assume from the word CRM alone.

Restoring the service answers a practical question: can the tool be used again? The investigation answers another: what happened, and with what consequences? Confusing the two would mean announcing too soon either a general catastrophe or that the case had been fully closed.

For users, the next useful developments are therefore clear: whether the features still awaited actually become available, whether any problems they are experiencing are resolved, and whether there is any further communication about data. It is these specific outcomes that will make it possible to assess what happens next in the incident.
