Building with what already exists

From 15 to 18 October, France’s National Architecture Days put rehabilitation in the spotlight. An invitation to take a look at what happens to buildings.

A former school, a block of flats, a sports facility: architecture does not always begin on an empty plot. In France, the 2026 edition of the National Architecture Days is devoted to transforming existing buildings, under the theme ‘Rehabilitate: building the future’. The national event is scheduled to take place from 15 to 18 October.

Transform rather than start from scratch

In its presentation of the theme, the Ministry of Culture describes rehabilitation as a way of adapting a building to contemporary uses while taking its architectural or heritage features into account. The scope therefore extends beyond monuments alone: housing, schools, industrial premises and shops may also be involved.

This is an interesting angle for a visit: look for what has been preserved, what has changed and what need the transformation addresses. A familiar façade can thus become the starting point for a discussion about how the building is used, rather than simply a backdrop to photograph. The editorial team suggests this as a guiding thread for planning your visit.

Two dates in the calendar

The national presentation distinguishes between Thursday 15 and Friday 16 October, aimed in particular at schoolchildren as part of ‘Levez les yeux!’ (‘Look up!’), and the weekend of 17 and 18 October. The eleventh edition brings together several formats: visits to practices or construction sites, urban walks, talks and workshops for young people.

For readers in Luxembourg considering a trip across the border, these dates provide a French framework. Opening arrangements vary from one venue to another: not every building will necessarily be accessible on all four days.

Choose a specific visit

The national website brings together the events. Before planning a trip, choose an event listing and check its address, timings and access or booking requirements. A construction-site visit and a city walk do not necessarily involve the same arrangements for visitors.

Above all, the theme offers a question to take with you: how can a place evolve without erasing what makes it recognisable? The answer is to be found in each project, from the people presenting it.
